And who are you, the proud lord said,
That I must bow so low?
Only a cat of a different coat,
That’s all the truth I know.
In a coat of gold or a coat of red,
A lion still has claws,
And mine are long and sharp, my lord,
As long and sharp as yours.
And so he spoke, and so he spoke,
That lord of Castamere,
But now the rains weep o’er his hall,
With no one there to hear.
Yes now the rains weep o’er his hall,
And not a soul to hear.
The lyrics are about young Tywin conquering House Tarbeck and House Reyne, who defied and mocked Lannisters the most during his father’s reign.
Tywin’s father was a known coward, and a fool, who allowed his own people and his enemies take advantage of him, and due to his ineptitude and naivety, he single handedly lead the kingdom into ruin.
Tywin, to undo this, eradicated both houses entirely, ending their lines, but leaving the ruins of their castles for everyone to see.
After the Lord of Casterly Rock established his dominance, and regained respect of his people, this song was written.
In short; Rains of Castamere is a “You don’t want Tywin Lannister to be your enemy” song.
